Look beyond the ordinary with the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S, a super-telephoto prime lens that has the longest focal length among the current NIKKOR Z line-up1.
Capture any distant subject in your line of sight. The superb reach of the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S allows you to photograph wildlife, airplane, race cars, or other subjects from a safe distance, while retaining outstanding image resolution. Its focal length can be further extended to 1120mm and 1600mm with the use of Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x or Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x respectively3.
Carry the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S around with ease for an extended duration as it only weighs approximately 2385g and measures 140mm (D) x 385mm (L) – with the adoption of a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, the overall weight and size of the lens has been greatly reduced.
The lens is also carefully designed to provide comfort by positioning the centre of gravity of the lens close to the photographer’s body, providing greater stability when shooting handheld, and smoother panning when the lens is mounted on a monopod. In addition, anti-slip rubber coating is applied to a larger surface area for a better grip. So whether you are shooting in the wild or at a match, you can stay focused on what’s important for a longer period of time.
Capture sharp images of still and moving subjects with excellent optical performance that is ubiquitous to the NIKKOR S-Line. A combination of Extra-low Dispersion (ED), Short-wavelength Refractive (SR), and Phase Fresnel (PF) lens elements are utilised to effectively suppress chromatic aberration even at maximum aperture, while Nano Crystal Coat and placement of the PF lens element significantly minimise ghosting effects. What’s more, the in-lens Vibration Reduction (VR) effectively compensates for camera shakes of up to 5.0-stops2, or up to 5.5-stops2 Synchro VR when used in tandem with the Z 9.
Focus and lock in onto your subject quickly and precisely, even at super-telephoto focal distance; score that shot without disturbing the environment or a shy animal with a stepping motor (STM) that operates in near-silent. With all these features, you can capture the finest details of a squirrel running up a tree, an airplane taking off at full throttle, or a hawk swooping down at speed.
Beautiful yet functional, the lens incorporates a rubber gasket on the lens mount, and sealing on different parts to prevent dust and liquid4 from entering the lens. The frontmost lens element also has a layer of fluorine coat for superior anti-fouling performance, so that dirt and dust can be removed easily.
Fall in love with not just what’s in the frame, but what’s in your hand, too. The lens is carefully crafted to incorporate the iconic look from the F mount and Z mount, taking the symbolic gold ring and engraved metal plate from the former, and the S-Line badge from the latter. The new HB-104 lens hood also features an improved lock mechanism that allows you to attach or remove it with one hand. Together with the customisable L-Fn buttons that save your favourite settings according to your preference, and Memory Recall function5 that saves your frequently used focus points, the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is simply a product designed with optical performance, operability and elegance in mind.

1. Key Features
The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S offers the longest*1 focal length of 800 mm in the NIKKOR Z lineup, allowing you to capture distant subjects such as aircraft, wild birds and other wildlife with dynamic image expression. Moreover, by attaching a teleconverter*2 (Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x or Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x), you can extend your reach to 1,120 mm and 1,600 mm respectively. Even when attaching a teleconverter, high optical performance can be stably maintained. Also, by using some of the Z 9’s video recording options, you can crop out images equivalent to that of approx. 2.3x focal length*3. You can now reliably capture distant subjects with outstanding image quality, for a highly satisfying shooting experience.
*1As of April 6, 2022. *2AF performance may deteriorate depending on the subject, brightness and focus position regardless of the camera body, causing inaccurate focus, slow focusing speed or flashing of the focus point. *3When the [Frame size/frame rate] is set at [3840×2160; 120p], [3840×2160; 100p], [1920×1080; 120p] or [1920×1080; 100p], and [DX] is selected for [Choose image area].
A substantial reduction in size and weight was attained by employing a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens element for the first time in the NIKKOR Z lineup. By using the phenomenon of light diffraction, a PF lens achieves high compensation capability for chromatic aberration and realizes significant reduction in size and weight by reducing the number of lens elements. Thanks to this, the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is only 2,385 g in weight and 385 mm in length, allowing you to take it into the mountains to capture wild birds with less burden, and reducing fatigue caused by long hours of picture-taking and transportation.
Maintaining an appropriate weight balance of the lens is crucial for smooth handling, especially for a super-telephoto lens. The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S provides improved moment of inertia by positioning the lens’ center of gravity closer to the body side, making you less aware of the weight of the lens. Even if the lens is swung around during panning, it’s easy to stop it at the desired position, supporting smoother shooting.
As well as providing an extended focal length of 800 mm, the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S delivers outstandingly high optical performance that fully deserves the S-Line designation for lenses that adhere to strict design principles and stringent quality control standards. In addition to the single PF lens element that realizes significant reduction in size and weight, three ED glass and one SR lens elements are adopted to effectively suppress axial chromatic aberration. As a result, superior resolution comparable to that of the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is attained, enabling accurate depiction of even the finest feathers of distant wild birds. In additional to the proven Nano Crystal Coat, the shape and location of the PF lens also have been optimized to significantly reduce ghost, achieving clearer images even under harsh lighting conditions.
The optical VR function provides a superior compensation effect equivalent to shooting at a shutter speed 5.0 stops* faster. Reliable picture-taking that realizes sharp images is ensured during super-telephoto shooting or shooting in low-light situations that are usually likely to produce blurred images caused by camera shake. Moreover, together with the Z 9, the effect of 5.5 stops* is achieved with Synchro VR activation, which enhances the blur-compensation effect even further.
*Based on CIPA Standard; in NORMAL mode; this value is achieved when attached to a mirrorless camera equipped with 35mm film size image sensor.
With its fast and precise AF, the NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is ideal for shooting moving subjects for both stills and videos even when the subjects continuously move. Also, the employment of an STM ensures excellent quietness with reduced operational sounds during focusing and movie recording. This feature is perfect for situations where silence is required, such as when shooting wild birds and other wildlife.
The lens has been designed to provide high dust- and drip-resistant performance* with a sealing on various portions including movable parts of the lens barrel, as well as the adoption of a rubber gasket on the lens mount, that prevent any dust or water droplets from entering the lens. Fluorine coat that repels dust or dirt for easy removal even if it adheres to the lens surface is also applied to the front lens element. All of this ensures high reliability when out on a shoot even under harsh environmental conditions.
*Thorough dust- and drip-resistance is not guaranteed in all situations or under all conditions.
The anti-slip rubber coating is applied to a larger area of the lens, ensuring more comfortable lens holding, while its tactile details such as knurling and small indents also support operation without visual confirmation. In addition, the lens is equipped with four L-Fn2 buttons and one L-Fn button to which a wide variety of functions can be assigned to suit your own preferences. The NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S also comes with the HB-104 Lens Hood which features an improved lock mechanism that enables removal with one hand. High operability and customizability support reliable use of this lens even by professional photographers.
An impactful bold form with a subtle design has been realized while maintaining superb operability. A metal plate featuring an engraved NIKKOR emblem and lens designation on the base hairline provides a sophisticated look. You can also confirm the individuality of Nikon through the Nikon yellow ring, visible even with the lens hood attached, and “S” metal emblems on both sides, that emphasize the NIKKOR and S-Line brands.
Superior operability has been pursued not only for still shooting but also for video recording. While achieving outstandingly high-resolution images equivalent to that of stills, quiet AF operation is realized with the employment of a stepping motor in the AF drive system. In addition, a focus-breathing compensation function which effectively reduces shifting of the angle of view that is likely to occur when adjusting focus is available. This allows you to freely change focus position after setting a composition. Also, smooth and stable aperture control delivers natural exposure changes when recording.
